ITV Wants to Limit It’s Public Service Commitments

ITV’s MD, Mick Desmond is reported (Free registration required) as wanting to scrap its commitments to religion and arts. I have problems with the fact that they want to get out of something they signed up to in the first place. If Granada and Carlton, or ITV plc as it is now, don’t feel that they can get a significant return on investment running channel 3, then I’m sure that some other company would be more than happy to take over the franchises. Let’s face it, what we really mean are some episodes of The South Bank Show, and a late night “morality” discussion fronted by Martin Lewis. Not exactly onerous. And it’s the thin end of the wedge. It’ll be kids telly next for sure.
