State of Play

I’m quite enjoying State of Play on BBC1, or in particular, BBC4, since they show the following week’s episodes, and once you get caught in that cycle, you’re not going to leave it.
The fact that it stars both Kelly McDonald and Polly Walker, was always going to make it must see, but it’s a great conspiracy thriller, set in a relatively believable world.
The paper all the action takes place in is called, The Herald, not to be confused with the Glasgow based publication that until recently was owned by my employees. I read a couple of pieces by journalists extolling the fine virtues of The Herald, and how it seems so much better than where they work.
So it was interesting in last night’s BBC4 episode that a paper that could hitherto have been the Scott Trust owned Guardian, suddenly had a proprieter emerging, capping expenditure on the story, and thus effectively killing it off. The media group were planning to bid for forthcoming radio licences!
