Froome at the Giro in 2018

I don’t mention it here as often as I should, but I do work as one of the producers on The Cycling Podcast. It’s has once again been nominated in the sports category for a British Podcast Award, and if it’s the sort of thing you do, you can vote for us in The Listener’s Choice here.

But I really wanted to point you in the direction of today’s episode.

As you’ve probably spotted, there’s hardly any sport going on at the moment, and right now should be the final weekend of the Giro d’Italia. That’s been pushed back until the autumn, so our crack team created “Our Giro”, an imagined tour of Italy, taking in the stories of races of the past, with lots of fresh interviews, and of course, capturing the food and wine of the different regions of Italy.

Today’s was one of my episodes, and it tells the story of that day in 2018 when Chris Froome went on what many would think was a wreckless attack, having been well down the General Classification, and somehow turned around a losing position into a victorious one. It was also the day that fellow Brit, Simon Yates, who’d been dominant for the first two and a half weeks, saw his lead collapse (He would brush himself down, and go on to win La Vuelta a España later in the year).

I didn’t collate any of these interviews – Richard Moore did most of them, with a couple from Daniel Friebe. The music is by our regular Giro musicians Amaraterra. But I did cut the whole thing together, and because just about every protagonist from the day’s events was interviewed, it means that you’ve got a pretty definitive documentary about what happened on that day.

Obviously, if you’re not interested in cycling, then it won’t be for you. But if you are, do have a listen.
