{"id":170,"date":"2003-01-04T00:37:21","date_gmt":"2003-01-04T00:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/2003\/01\/tomorrows_world\/"},"modified":"2003-01-04T00:37:21","modified_gmt":"2003-01-04T00:37:21","slug":"tomorrows_world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/blog\/2003\/01\/tomorrows_world\/","title":{"rendered":"Tomorrow&#8217;s World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tragically, <i>Tomorrow&#8217;s World<\/i> has been <a href=\"http:\/\/media.guardian.co.uk\/broadcast\/story\/0,7493,868311,00.html\">cancelled<\/a> by the BBC.<br \/>\nThis is a terrible state of affairs, leaving no popular science programmes on mainstream terrestrial television. We have hour long specials with Horizon on BBC2, and that&#8217;s about it. We&#8217;re told that the programme name will remain for specials, but the problem with these is that they&#8217;ll concentrate on single issues. Science is becoming more and more important in society and yet there is no programming on television covering it.<br \/>\nOnly this week, China has announced its first <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/asia-pacific\/2620915.stm\">manned space mission<\/a>, and a dodgy religious sect <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/health\/2624661.stm\">claims<\/a> to have cloned the first human. This is the tip of the iceberg, and a science correspondent on the news is not enough.<br \/>\nBBC News Online recently broke out <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/technology\/default.stm\">Technology<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/sci\/tech\/default.stm\">Science and Nature<\/a> section which would suggest that they&#8217;re both popular sections. Intrinsically people want and need to know about this stuff.<br \/>\nCertainly ratings have been poor, but then it&#8217;s up against ITV&#8217;s biggest programme, Coronation Street.<br \/>\nI am well and truly shocked.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tragically, Tomorrow&#8217;s World has been cancelled by the BBC.
