{"id":369,"date":"2003-08-08T09:33:48","date_gmt":"2003-08-08T09:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/2003\/08\/embers\/"},"modified":"2003-08-08T09:33:48","modified_gmt":"2003-08-08T09:33:48","slug":"embers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/blog\/2003\/08\/embers\/","title":{"rendered":"Embers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0141004312\">this book<\/a> for two reasons.<br \/>\n1) it was advertised quite heavily in the national press, and anyone who says that it doesn&#8217;t work is deceiving only themselves, and<br \/>\n2) I read an interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/books.guardian.co.uk\/review\/story\/0,12084,894911,00.html\">piece<\/a> about it in The Guardian Review a few weeks back, which recommended it.<br \/>\nThe book was first published in Hungarian in 1942, and then was reissued a few years ago in both Italy and Germany, where it sold by the bucket load.<br \/>\nI quite enjoyed it, but wouldn&#8217;t say that it was anything special. It&#8217;s quite a short novel, and basically is set over the course of one evening, as two old men meet for the first time in 40 odd years.<br \/>\nMost of the second part of the book is the ensuing conversation, meaning that it&#8217;s highly readable, if slightly rambling.
