{"id":3987,"date":"2014-10-27T17:36:56","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T17:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/?p=3987"},"modified":"2014-10-27T17:36:56","modified_gmt":"2014-10-27T17:36:56","slug":"jumping-the-gun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/jumping-the-gun\/","title":{"rendered":"Jumping the Gun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the weekend, there was something of a kerfuffle in cycling circles over some allegations that a cycling company had ripped off someone else&#8217;s designs.<\/p>\n<p>You can read the story <a href=\"http:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/133872-wiggle-investigate-plagiarism-claim-ana-nichoola-star-gate-row\">here at road.cc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The accused company, Wiggle (who I&#8217;ve bought a decent amount of cycling accessories and clothing from), has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/wiggle\/posts\/10152828389825429\">responded on Facebook<\/a>, and have very politely rejected the idea that they&#8217;ve plagiarised anyone.<\/p>\n<p>A few thoughts come to mind from this affair:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; In the design world, it&#8217;s never easy to say who came up with an idea first. &#8220;Inspiration&#8221; comes from lots of places. <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It&#8217;s probably best to conduct these sort of things behind closed doors. If you don&#8217;t get a satisfactory response in a fair and reasonable time, then shout from rafters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Don&#8217;t make your complaint on a Friday evening or over a weekend. It&#8217;s just unfair on the other party. Give them a fair timetable to get back to you.<\/p>\n<p>In a socially connected world, consumers do hold a lot of power. But without full knowledge of the facts of a case,  we can be pushed into making rash decisions. Walk away from the keyboard, and have a think before you post.
