My monthly bill is \u00a38.50 a month which is not insignificant. And <em>The New York Times<\/em> has been doing very well with subscriptions of late. It recently reported having over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/08\/business\/media\/new-york-times-q2-earnings.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/08\/business\/media\/new-york-times-q2-earnings.html\">10 million subscribers<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But like any subscription scheme, they&#8217;re very keen that I &#8220;upgrade&#8221; to a more expensive tier. There&#8217;s something called &#8220;All Access&#8221; which bundles in recipes, <em>The Wirecutter<\/em> (their product reviews site), games and The Athletic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking each in turn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recipes &#8211; I don&#8217;t want because I don&#8217;t use them that much and BBC Good Food or other free sites tend to be fine for my needs. Also, I don&#8217;t need to decode how much butter &#8220;one cup&#8221; might be, or what &#8220;all purpose flour&#8221; is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Wirecutter<\/em> &#8211; This is great &#8211; it&#8217;s a bit like <em>Which<\/em> for Americans. And therein is the problem. Many of the items I go looking for are US-only. So handy, but not handy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Games &#8211; Well I play Wordle, but that&#8217;s it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Athletic<\/em> &#8211; I <em>do <\/em>subscribe to this too. But when I tried to cancel thinking I&#8217;d get both <em>The Athletic<\/em> and <em>The New York Times <\/em>in a bundle, they made me an offer I couldn&#8217;t refuse that was <em>cheaper<\/em> than the bundle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So <strong>I don&#8217;t want to upgrade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn&#8217;t an answer. Whenever I open the <em>Time<\/em> on the web, I can expect to see at least one footer banner overlay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2-1024x569.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2-1024x569.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2-1536x854.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2-150x83.png 150w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt2.png 1622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above is on an HD screen. If I&#8217;m on a lower resolution device, it&#8217;s even more invasive. I can expect one of those every session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the blue box at the top that say &#8220;TRY NYT COOKING.&#8221; It&#8217;s there permanently, on <em>every single page<\/em>. Previously it just said &#8220;UPGRADE&#8221; on <em>every single page.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there are the emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So many emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt3-1024x593.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt3-1024x593.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt3-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt3-768x445.png 768w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt3-150x87.png 150w, https:\/\/www.adambowie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/nyt3.png 1530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The above shows that I&#8217;ve had <strong>67 emails<\/strong> in the last year (3 of the 70 listed were in 2022), with <strong>15 in the last two months!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I <em>can<\/em> opt-out of marketing communications within email settings, but that also means losing other more useful emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I understand that growing their subscription business is key to their future, but this is just ridiculous, and <strong>at this point, I&#8217;m more likely to unsubscribe altogether rather than &#8220;upgrade.&#8221; <\/strong>Thanks, but no thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An aside: previously <em>The New York Times<\/em> didn&#8217;t even allow you to cancel your subscription online. You had to <em>phone<\/em> someone. They do at least seem to be offering this again.
